Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) Under Rusa

Instructions for admission to B.A./B.Com 1 st year of UGC pass course under RUSA in new CBCS template of UGC for the academic session i.e. 2016-17 onwards:

  • The eligibility conditions regarding the age limit, pass percentage or minimum eligibility, etc. at the entry level to B.Com./B.A. remains the same as mentioned in the original HP University ordinance.
  • The formation of the units/ number of students in a class/subject remains the same as per the HP Govt. notification of 2015 i.e. first unit/section of subject will be 80 students and subsequent units/section of 60 each depending upon the availability of faculties in the colleges. The admission in different streams will be done as per the HPU roster.
  • Since the executive council of HP University has approved the CBCS template of UGC for the academic session 2016-2017, the combination of elective subject chosen as discipline specific course can be allotted/given to the students as per the availability of faculties in the subject and infrastructure in the respective colleges.
  • The discipline specified programme chosen by student shall be based on choice based credit system. The programme shall be considered completed when the student cumulates the requisite number of successful credits (passed) i.e. at least 132 credits for undergraduate degree.

Terminology of Courses

  • Core Course: A course, which should compulsorily be studied by a candidate as a core requirement is termed as a core course.
  • Elective Course: Generally a course which can be chosen from a pool of courses and which may be very specific or specialized or advanced or supportive to the discipline/ subject of study or which provides an extended scope or which enables an exposure to some other discipline/subject/domain or nurtures the candidate’s proficiency/skill is called an Elective Course.
  • Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Course: Elective courses offered by the main discipline/subject of study is referred to as Discipline Specific Elective. The University/Institute may also offer discipline related Elective courses of interdisciplinary nature (to be offered by main discipline/subject of study).
  • Dissertation/Project: An elective course designed to acquire special/advanced knowledge, such as supplement/support study to a project work, and a candidate
    studies such a course on his own with an advisory support by a teacher is called dissertation/ project. Introducing research component in under-graduate courses project work/dissertation is considered as a special course involving application of knowledge in solving/analyzing /exploring a real life situation /difficult problem. A project/dissertation work would be of 6 credits. A project/dissertation work may be given in lieu of a discipline specific elective paper.
  • Generic Elective (GE) Course: An elective course chosen generally from an unrelated discipline/subject, with an intention to seek exposure is called a Generic Elective. P.S.: A core course offered in a discipline/subject may be treated as an elective by other discipline/subject and vice versa and such electives may also be referred to as Generic Elective.
  • Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC): The Ability Enhancement (AE) Courses may be of two kinds: Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) and Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC).
  • Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC): “AECC” courses are the courses based upon the content that leads to knowledge enhancement such as Environmental Science, English Communication/MIL Communication. These are mandatory for all disciplines.
  • Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC): SEC courses are value-based and/or skill-based and are aimed at providing hands-on-training, competencies, skills, etc. These courses may be chosen from a pool of courses designed to provide value-based and/or skill- based knowledge.

List of Undergraduate Courses Being Offered Under CBCS

Students Course Wise Continuous Comprehensive Assessments (CCA) and Evaluation

  • All courses involve an evaluation system of students that has the following two components:
    (I) Continuous Comprehensive Assessment (CCA) = 30 Marks
    Attendance = 5
    Mid-term = 15
    Assignment/Quiz/Seminar etc=10
    (II) Term End Examination (TEE) = 70 Marks.
  • Classroom Attendance: Each student will have to attend a minimum of 75% lectures/tutorials/practical as a student having less 75% attendance will not be allowed to appear in the End Year Examination (EYE).
  • Provided that those having between 74 and 65% attendance will apply for exemption in a prescribed form accompanied by clear reason(s) for absence to the authorized functionaries.
  • Provided that those having between 64% and 50% attendance will apply for exemption in a prescribed form accompanied by Medical Certificate from Government Hospital.
  • Provided that exemption from 75% attendance will be given to those participating in a prescribed co-curricular activities(e.g. NSS, Youth Festivals, Sports etc.) to the extent o 25% (making the necessary attendance as 50% in these cases). However, the claim for this exemption should be supported by authenticated certificate from the concerned college authorities.

  • Provided further that those getting the exemptions, except for those getting exemption for co-curricular activities, will not be entitled for getting the CCA marks for classroom attendance as given below.
  • Classroom Attendance Incentive: Those having greater than 75% attendance will be awarded CCA marks as follows:
    >75% but % <80% 1 Marks.
    >80% but % <85% 2 Marks
    >85% but %  <90% 3 Marks.
    >90% but %  <95% 4 Marks.
    >95 % 5 Marks.
    * For those participating in co-curricular activities 25% will be added to percent attendance.

Important: The 7.10 (D) of HP University clarifies that only those students shall be allowed to appear in the TTE who has been successful in the CCA. Minimum marks to qualify the CCA are 35%.
